Rabbeted Router Templates

What does a rabbet on a template do?

When I first started using templates on my router table, I found it quite difficult to get the bit height set exactly right. If the wood varied at all in thickness, or if I pressed down harder in one area than another, I often either cut into the template or was left with an unwanted onion skin on the project that had to be painstakingly sanded off later. By simply putting a rabbet on the template, I can now very quickly and efficiently set the height of the bit, and thankfully, there is no damage done to the template itself, nor is there that frustrating onion skin to sand off afterwards.

Simple to Use

To get started, do a rough cut around the project piece, getting as close as possible to the shape of the template without cutting beyond its outline. The closer you get to the template's edge, the less work there will be for the bit, resulting in a much smoother and cleaner cut overall. Next, tape the template onto your project using double-sided tape (I personally prefer XFasten tape), ensuring that the rabbeted side is facing towards your project piece. For this process, utilize a flush trim router bit equipped with a top bearing. The rabbet height is 1/16”, which enables you to easily and quickly adjust the bit’s height so that the bearing rides smoothly along the template while still leaving enough room to properly align the cutting edge of the bit.

WARNING: I am assuming that you possess the necessary knowledge and experience to safely operate a router. If you’re not entirely confident in your skills, please take the time to refer to the numerous instructional videos online that demonstrate the safe use of a router at your table. Always be especially cautious regarding the direction in which you move your piece along the bit to ensure safety and precision!
